Paint Nights are popular fundraisers and as artists Geneviéve Hoover and Chris Drake found they are a great way to have an evening out, learn new art techniques, meet other people, have fun and come away with a new painting.
In 2018, Chris and Geneviéve attended two Paint Night events together. The first was in support of Chris’s hockey club, the Capital City Condors. The second was for the Carleton Place Canoe Club, where they both paddle in the summer. Each featured sunset paintings, a favourite theme for both. Geneviéve loves the colour pink and sunsets are often pink. Chris just loves sunsets.
At a Paint Night, everyone sits at tables with their canvas on an easel and all the supplies needed for the painting before them. Chris and Geneviéve like to sit together, where they can see what the other is doing. Generally, acrylic paints are used as they dry quickly and are water soluble, making for easy clean up if there is a spill.
The Paint Night leader, demonstrates each step of the painting and moves about encouraging the participants, answering questions and admiring the results. Some show how to do the whole painting with just one brush, using different stroke techniques to get the needed effects. Others provide different sized brushes, small for fine details, larger ones for filling in.
Chris and Geneviéve are methodical and precise in their work and very neat. They rarely get paint on themselves and their end results are always amazing as you can see.
